Top Ten Books I’d Give a Theme Song To

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week we were asked to set theme songs to books we’ve read… This was TOUGH, but here goes!

1. Tiger’s CurseEye of the Tiger – Survivor – Oh, come on, you had to have seen that one coming. “So many times, it happens too fast, you trade your passion for glory. Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past, you must fight just to keep them alive…”

2. HourglassTime in a Bottle – Jim CroceThis really was the first song I could think of. It describes the romance in the book, at least. “If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I’d like to do is to save every day ’til eternity passes away, just to spend them with you…”

3. The Disenchantments – You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) – Dead or Alive – Records, spinning round, the back and forth nature of teenage emotions at the cusp of life, music… Yeah, that’s about right… “All I know is that to me you look like you’re lots of fun. Open up your lovin’ arms. Watch out, here I come.”

4. STARTERSBittersweet Symphony – The Verve –This song talks about having to support others, getting by, and yet being a million people and trying to find one’s self/ The lyrics are written almost as if they were MADE for this story. “I am here in my mind, but I’m a million different people from one day to the next. I can’t change my mind…”

5-7. Fallen/Incarnate/Daughter of Smoke & Bone  – Highwayman – Johnny Cash – A good song about reincarnation. Am I cheating by setting it to three books? “I fly a starship across the Universe divide. And when I reach the other side I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can. Perhaps I may become a highwayman again. Or I may simply be a single drop of rain. But I will remain and I’ll be back again, and again and again and again and again.”

8. The Iron Fey (Iron King/Daughter/Queen/Knight) – As the World Falls Down – David Bowie – I was thinking quite a bit of Labyrinth and David Bowie while reading this series. It brought back good memories of my childhood. And I was also crushing as hard on Ash as I did the Goblin King in the 80s and 90s. “I’ll paint you mornings of gold. I’ll spin you Valentine evenings. Though we’re strangers ’til now, we’re choosing the path between the stars. I’ll leave my love between the stars…”

9. Shine – Hate Me – Blue October – I picked this song for a certain character in particular, but to say who would give away the story. I think of it as a song from one character to another. “I have to block out thoughts of you so I don’t lose my head. They crawl in like a cockroach, leaving babies in my bed…”

10. Graceling – Bad Reputation – Joan Jett & the Blackhearts – I found myself humming this any time Katsa was looked at strangely or in fear. “I don’t give a damn ’bout my bad reputation. You’re living in the past it’s a new generation. A girl can do what she wants to do and that’s what I’m gonna do…”

I think these songs slightly show my age…

  1. Love this!!!!! I wish I had the time to make play lists on my computer for each book I read. I can’t tell you how often a song will randomly pop into my head while reading! Brilliant post, Jenna! 🙂

  2. I’m loving Bad Reputation for Graceling. It’s funky and perfect for Katsa.

  3. Yes, that’s cheating! Besides, the “I fly a starship across the Universe divide. And when I reach the other side I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can.” part could go perfectly for Across the Universe…
&, yeah, the Eye of the Tiger suits! Though, when I finished it -ah, THAT end!- it remainded me of a song in spanish named “Hoy ya me voy” -I leave today, or something like that- by Kamy Garcia~ A song in spanish also reminds me of Incarnate, but I can’t remember its name ):

  4. I love this, very creative and some of my favorite songs too. Blue October, is one of my favorite groups, glad to see it for the theme song for Shine. Can’t wait to read it. 😉 Thank You!!
