Make it a Movie Monday (5) Wither
This meme is a way to discuss the books that have made their way to film, or to talk about the books we wish would be made into a movie. You are open to talk about any book out there in any way that you want. For example: Who would you have play the leads in the movie? Who would direct? Animated or live action? Etc. For more info about how to include your own Make it a Movie Monday (MiaMM) on your blog, click here.
This week my meme will focus on Wither by Lauren DeStefano. I have been thinking of tomorrow’s release of Fever for some time now, and as a result I am inspired to share my dream cast if there were ever to be a Wither movie. Who knows, what with the trend of teen reads being turned into movies… Let me know if you agree with my selections below!
By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children. When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can’t bring herself to hate him as much as she’d like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband’s strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape–before her time runs out? Together with one of Linden’s servants, Gabriel, Rhine attempts to escape just before her seventeenth birthday. But in a world that continues to spiral into anarchy, is there any hope for freedom?
Jenna’s Wither Dream Cast:
Rhine Ellery – Indiana Evans
A sixteen-year-old girl from Manhattan who was kidnapped to be Linden’s wife. She is the narrator and protagonist of the novel. Rhine has heterochromia, one blue eye and one brown eye. This girl is gorgeous. And she is a younger looking version of Evan Rachel Wood, who I have selected to play Rose. Can you picture her with different colored eyes?
Linden Ashby – Hunter Parrish
A young architect who marries Rhine, Jenna, and Cecily at the start of the novel. He is also married to Rose. Best known for his role on the TV series, Weeds, Hunter has a refined look about him that could play very well for Linden. Haha! At times he makes me think of a young, blonde Christopher Reeve...
Jenna – Nina Dobrev
The oldest of Linden’s new wives at 18. She dislikes living in the mansion as much as Rhine but is less adamant about trying to escape. I love it when characters have my name. Unfortunately, I cannot be cast as any of them… But Nina Dobrev fills this roll quite well (IMO). How many of you know her from The Vampire Diaries?
Cecily – Bella Thorne
The youngest of the sister wives at 13. She is the most excited about the marriage and enjoys her new life. She later bears a child named Bowen. OK, so what, so she’s a Disney kid. But she really does seem to fit the role of Cecily perfectly, AND she’s the right age. She was in the Disney show, Shake It Up, so the younger crowd would at least know of her.
Rose – Evan Rachel Wood
Linden’s first wife, age 20, who is bedridden because of her age and failing health. She is stressed by the medicines given to her and wishes for death. Rose was once pregnant with Linden’s child, but it was a stillbirth. Evan Rachel Wood is known for her performance as Lucy in Across the Universe. I could see her as the most “mature” member of the cast. I initially thought of her for Rhine, but thought that she looked a bit “too mature”, which makes her more appropriate for Rose.
Vaughn – Jason Isaacs
Linden’s father and Housemaster of the mansion where the novel takes place. He seeks a cure to the virus, using whatever means necessary. Oh, come on. You know who Jason Isaacs is. Does the name Lucius Malfoy ring a bell? Can’t you just SEE this man as the head of THIS manor/mansion? Indeed.
Gabriel – Jeremy Sumpter
One of many servants in the mansion. He is assigned to care for Rhine and develops a relationship with her. Known for his roles in the TV series, Friday Night Lights, and the movie Soul Surfer, Jeremy is just plain H-O-T. I see him as a perfect rugged looking Gabriel. Yes, my Gabriel is rugged.
Rowan – Landon Liboiron
Rhine’s twin brother, who is seen only in flashbacks of their life together before Rhine was kidnapped. Rhine believes he is still in New York, looking for her. Landon is oh-so-swoon-worthy and doesn’t he look just like Indiana Evans? They could be twins if he lightened his hair just a bit.
