Author Interview & Giveaway: Colleen Houck

Featured in the Follower Love Giveaway Hop this week is Tiger’s Voyage, the third book in the Tiger’s Curse series by Colleen Houck. I am honored to have been able to interview Colleen about her series, as well as her plans for the next installment, TIGER’S DESTINY, scheduled for release on September 4, 2012.

ABOUT COLLEEN HOUCK:

Colleen Houck is a lifelong reader whose literary interests include action, adventure, science fiction and romance. Formerly a student at the University of Arizona, she has worked as a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter for seventeen years. TIGER’S VOYAGE is the third book in her TIGER’S CURSE series, which has already received both literary praise and digital success. Colleen lives in Salem, Oregon, with her husband and a white stuffed tiger.

THE INTERVIEW:

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Sure! I am a bit of an organizing freak. I recently redid all the cupboards in my kitchen. My hubby and I both work from home so we get to eat lunch together and generally drive each other crazy. I never went to prom and though I went on a few dates with other guys, my husband is the only boyfriend I ever had. I’m the oldest of seven kids so I’m used to being in charge. My other job was a sign language interpreter and since my husband is Deaf I still get to practice.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I’m a television and movie nut and I also love reading. I occasionally do crafty things with my mom like making jewelry or sewing. Cooking is something I enjoy too, baking especially.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

I loved the Black Stallion books which possibly fueled my love of stories featuring animals. I also loved the Little House on the Prairie books and related to the character of Laura especially. I think the idea of having a life of adventure and eventually ending up with the man of your dreams is a resounding theme for me which has been inspired by my love of these types of books. Fairy tales and happily ever afters also influence my writing style.

Regarding the Tiger saga, what inspired you to write the series?

I love the story of Beauty and the Beast. The beast was a handsome prince but with a bit of an edge and bit more character. I chose a white tiger for the beast half of my prince and then research led me to India. When I found the story of Durga riding her tiger into battle, my books began to take form.

What has been your favorite chapter (or part) to write so far and why?

I love writing fight scenes, not battle scenes those are my worst but when my characters have a romantic spat. I giggle through the whole thing and really enjoy creating romantic tension thick enough to leap off the pages.  Those are my favorite parts.

We know there is a lot going on in the story. Do your characters try to make like bunnies and create ever more convoluted plots for you? Or do you have to coax the events out of them? (In other words, how does the story evolve for you?)

I’ve always known more or less where the story was going to go. Though I allow myself to wander a bit on tangents I always guide my characters back to where I need them to be. I think this is my organization freak nature coming through. My outlines are stored pretty well in my head and everything has its place.

If there is ONE THING you would like readers to know about Tiger’s Voyage, what would it be?

I guess that Tiger’s Voyage is my favorite book in the series. This book is really where I could explore the love triangle to its fullest and though there is a lot of action there’s a lot of romance too.  I also love stories featuring the ocean so this book is very special to me.

Can you reveal anything about the fourth installment to the series, Tiger’s Destiny? *eye wink*

Each of my books has a themed element. Curse was earth, Quest was air, Voyage was water and Destiny is fire.  There are all kinds of fiery monsters and creatures in Destiny for our heroes to battle. My villain, Lokesh, is featured much more prominently so the whole feel of the book is darker and more dangerous.

Many of us who already know you, KNOW that you are a self-professed foodie. Can you share your favorite recipe with our readers?

The recipe I’m always asked for is Ren’s chocolate peanut butter cookies.  Here is the recipe:

Ren’s Cookies

  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup dark cocoa powder
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 bag of chocolate chips

Filling

  • ¾ cup smooth peanut butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar

Cream the butter then add sugars. When it’s light and fluffy, add eggs, and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients and mix with the wet until thoroughly combined.  Add one package of chocolate chips or as many as you like.  Mix together the filling then place some of the chocolate dough on the sheet, top with some peanut butter filling and then cover with some more chocolate dough.  Bake at 350 for 12-20 minutes depending on cookie size.

(Oh my goodness, those sound delicious!) Thank you for taking the time to talk to Making the Grade! I can’t wait to find out what happens to Kelsey and her tiger princes in Tiger’s Destiny this September!
